Although I enjoy going on my walks looking for birds and am especially happy when I observe one I had not seen previously, I do not consider myself a real birder. I am really excited about getting the picture not merely seeing a particular species. I also am looking for the exotic or colorful birds. I am not interested in being able to identify all the species of sparrows on sight. I wish I was better at identifying birds in the field but I just do not have the interest to study the subtleties that distinguish them. I have gone out with bird groups and they spot the species and move on while I want to hang around and see if I can get a picture. I also am not a great spotter. I have gone on walks with my grandkids and they are more likely to point the bird out to me than I am to point one out to them.
