One of the aspects of travel is learning the history of the places you are thinking of visiting. Of course I had history in school. But my memory of the subject is that it was very Eurocentric (especially England) and focused on memorizing dates and who the rulers were. Now I find that history is much more interesting because I am able to delve into the why of the events. I have been surprised many times to find that the place I am visiting has a history I was not even aware of. Certainly Southeast Asia has a past that was not even touched on during my schooling. The mighty civilizations and the structures they left behind are striking.
